Title: SCV April news...
URL:http://suncoastveloracing.com/
Hello all,
I want to thank you for coming to the team picture at the Del Mar race. It’s very important that our sponsors ‘see’ the entire team. The pictures are posted in the ‘photos’ section for viewing and information on purchasing club and squad pictures. Isn’t it great to have a professional photographer on our team? Thank you Mark.

A special thank you to those who volunteered time and or services to the Del Mar race series. I know many of us worked at one or more of the races to actively show our colors and support the cause as co-sponsors. However, I must say, not as many of you answered the call to action as I had expected. Our club really didn’t have to do much work in the organization of the series, just help a bit here and there with the light work. As race co-sponsors, I would not give SCV a passing grade in the volunteering portion. It will be our goal next year to improve our race support with 100% member participation.

UPDATES

Web page – Let’s thank ‘Odie’ O’Dell for the complete overhaul of our website. He is continually working to enhance the site to improve its look, usability for the leadership team and membership. I would like the web page to be our primary communication tool. The announcement page and new blog sites will provide us the opportunity to report on club activities. I highly recommend that we move away from the ‘yahoo groups’ mass emails forum and work through our web page. If you have any questions on gaining access to the member’s only page on the website please contact Odie.

Web projects under construction:

•               General Member accessible announcements blog: Currently only the leadership team can create announcements
•               Create announcement blog to post - "Soledad repeats today at 5…”
•               A classifieds blogs: just want it sounds like
•               Website e-mail. The ability to e-mail the entire club or a particular squad.
•               Capturing posts to the yahoo groups.
•               Photos upload tool: So members can upload their own photos.
•               A centralize ordering page: for ordering clothing and equipment

Team gear – This year’s design incorporated elements of our SCV wave logo into the kit’s theme creating a one-of-a kind professional image. Please wear it every time you ride, especially at the Saturday rides from UC Cyclery. Our sponsors paid for the majority of our uniforms to advertise their businesses.

Specialized/SCV order - We are very fortunate to have Chris Allen of Specialized now a member of our club and the 35 + team. Chris has cleared the way to make one more order in 2007 for SCV members.

ACTION ITEMS

Web page info - Please update your information on the member’s data base and race calendar for your events completed and planned. Your race information will be used for the race reimbursement process.
Keep those race stories coming in. They are shared with our sponsors - They like hearing were their products and financial support goes.

Now that you’ve had a chance to log in some miles on the new gear and get a good feel for the quality, form and fit can you please send a brief evaluation of the gear to Mitch Weinstock (45+ team) our liaison to Squadra/Castelli. Your evaluation should be constructive with concerns or comments about the gear.

Reorder for additional team gear - If you are interested in purchasing additional team gear please contact your team leader immediately. The order form is in the ‘documents’ section for pricing information. No need to send money yet, just a show of interest to determine if we have enough items to generate a new order. If not, we’ll try again in a few months. At the time of our first order, we purchased extra design templates. This will reduce delivery time to 3-4 weeks from the order date.

Specialized/SCV order - Your order and check must be to your team leader by April 25. The team order will be placed on April 30 with delivery expected in 1-2 weeks (inventory dependant as new ’08 line starts in July.) The order form is in the ‘documents’ section for pricing information. All orders must go through your team leader. Make check payable to UC Cyclery.

New instructions –
•               Go to an authorized Specialized dealer to get fitted on the bike you are ordering
•               Make sure you correctly identify the bike size, crank arm length in standard or compact crankset
•               Do not ask to change the wheel sets, or components on the bikes in this offer
•               Remember, if you order it, it’s yours. There will be NO exchanges
•               All Specialized orders must be approved by your team leader
•               The bikes must be built by UCC for a special reduced fee of $60
•               The bikes & equipment can be viewed on [www.Specialized.com] or at a Specialized dealer

Club and squad pictures - $10 for an 8x10 or $5 for a 5x7. Please contact your team lead if you want to order pictures. Make check payable to Mark Johnson.

Again, thank you for coming to the website for this update. I feel with practice, we should all get comfortable coming to the site several times per week to stay in touch with club news and activities. If you have any questions or comments, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Cheers,

Joey

Title: Race season starts …
URL:
Many of us have already completed a race or two as the race season starts early for the Southern California racer. We are so lucky to be on the road and not in the basement until April like the cyclist back east. I know most of us are still working ourselves into racing form and look forward to a great season for Sun Coast Velo. I want to encourage all the squads to meet to develop your race schedules. Please make a sincere effort to train and race together as much as possible. Remember we race as UC Cyclery/ JW Floors.

The ’07 Del Mar Criterium Series starts Wednesday, Mar.14 and Mar. 28 finishing on Sat. April 7. Please participate in the great local event. Sun Coast Velo is a cash co-sponsor of the series. I’d like to see as many of us at the races for the entire series. Let’s challenge for the team “Del Mar Crit Trophy”. See www.delmarcrit.com for details.

Answer to the million dollar question – Sunday, April 1. The question is. When will receive on new ’07 uniform?

Team picture day – Sunday, April 1 Please schedule this day as a mandatory team meeting at UC Cyclery for distribution of the ’07 kit and team pictures. Kits issued at 9 a.m. Team pictures and team ride to follow.

Sponsorship News

UC Cyclery – Dave Sedeghi, owner announced in conjunction with Specialized that UCC will become a Specialized concept store. I have volunteered our help with the grand opening sale in any way that we can support UCC. More details will follow as the grand opening date is established. We are working with Dave to coordinate and instruct three Basic ‘Cycling 101’ on-the-bike clinics for UCC customers. I will be calling on you to help as an instructor to share your cycling skills and knowledge of our favorite activity.

UCC/SCV sponsorship highlights – We will do team orders four times a year in March, May, July and September. By implementing a quarterly ordering process we will receive additional discounts based on the value and single sourcing of our order. Each squad has a coordinator in Rick Pfeiffer- 55’s, Bob Willcox - 45’s, Mario Medina – 35’s and Paul Stewart – Ladies’ Team. Bob Willcox will be our club’s liaison with Casper at UCC. For details see the members’ section re: Member/Sponsorship benefits – UC Cyclery

JW Floors – John Wallace has again sponsored our club in 2007. He also supports SCV members with VIP discount on all JW Floors products & services. For details see the members’ section re: Member/Sponsorship benefits – JW Floors

Specialized – Chris Allen of Specialized placed our first Team order on Jan. 31. This new sponsorship gave us the opportunity to purchase bikes and equipment at special pricing. We will be placing our final ’07 order on April 20. Start saving your cash for this great opportunity. Orders are placed with all payment (check) in advance. No exceptions. Prices are confidential and for members only. The Specialized order form are is the member’s document section. Please contact me with any questions regarding our next order.

Team Reports

45 Team – Tom Schwartz is the new 45+ team captain. Jay Kopelman is on medical leave. He and I felt it was better for the squad to have a more active team leader. Jay will be helping with administrative projects. Tom brings to the squad experience as a racer and leaderships skills from his teaching career and coaching organized high school sports.

The squad has started the season in fine fashion, with a number of squad veterans and newcomers firing up the engines for races in California and Arizona.

Of note, new team member Scott Baker set a PR at the Fiesta Island TT in January, finishing an impressive 2nd. He followed that up with a very credible showing at Valley of the Sun, placing third in the time trial, and finishing in 11th in the final GC standings! Outstanding performances, Scott.

Obviously, Scott isn't the only 45+ racer off to a great start this season.
Our mates have been racing at Fiesta Island, Dominguez Hills, Costa Mesa and Imperial Valley.
At IV, Kal Szkalak, Mark Helvie, Mike McConnell, Rick Roberson, and Joey Valdivia lined up for the 50+ race. And Troy Raffelson and Scott Baker lined it up for the 40+ race. All in all, it was a great showing for the UCC/JWF boys Mark and Kal going 1-2 in the 50+ race. Kal placed 3rd with Mark getting 5th in the 40+ race. Paul Rodriguez is also back at it hard again this year, garnering a 2nd place finish at the season opener in Carson.

Bob Barney, 55 Team – Early season activity has seen the newly acquired Bill Tippets racing the 45+ at Boulevard RR and though he is "not a crit guy" did very well at the 45+ CBR race in Costa Mesa. “Joltin” Johnny Edwards is already in fine form and helped with victories at Brea and Costa Mesa. Of course John “Rocket Boy” Rubcic is off to a fast start. He raced the 45+ RR at Boulevard, and has victories at Brea and Costa Mesa.

Patrick Phillips, 35 Team –This year’s squad is working to develop team racing skills both in training rides and at the races. Another team goal is to help the Cat. 4’s get their upgrade so the entire team will be able to focus on Cat 3 and Master’s races. Craig Kim and Mario Medina participated in the Valley of the Sun SR. Mitch Porche has started his season very well with podiums at Boulevard, Red Trolley and Costa Mesa.

Paul Stewart, Ladies’ Team – The year has started off good for some and not so good for others. Even before the season started we lost a rider but found another one in, Kat Patterson. She is a Cat 2 racer and with some more racing and training in her legs, I believe she will be a very good complement to our current team. Results are coming in already. Karryn Bowen has racked up a nice resume so far this year. She already has 2 wins, 1 Third, 1 Fourth, 1 Ninth, and a 12h place G.C. in the Valley of the Sun Stage Race. That was her last race as a 4 as she will be moving up to Cat 3 for the Dominguez Hills race on March 4th. Claudia is also getting a taste of the road after many years on the dirt. She took 2nd place in the 17-18 Jr. Women’s race at the Red Trolley Crit. Karryn was 1st in that race. With a little more experience she will be a contender in the hilly RR’s. Trina Jacobson is coming along very nicely as well. She keeps progressing in her results, which is what this team is all about. Tamara Gonzalez has been an invaluable teammate while maybe not in the form she would like to be quite yet. She has turned herself inside out helping a teammate in a race when she could have easily just tried to get her best placing. Beatrice has also been one of the more active racers this year. One of her goals is getting better in her TT’s. By the looks of Valley of the Sun she is on her way there. Stay tuned for more news on the ladies team.

Web page update – Odie O’Dell

Thank you all for your input and suggestions to enhance our new website. We are encouraging you to actively use the webpage as our primary communication tool. Please add your member and race calendar information if you’ve yet to do that.

We want to hear about your races. Don’t be shy, send in a race recap on the team or a note with your reflection on a recent event. Last week, Joey received a call from John Wallace (JW Floors) saying “It was like I was there.” These are import for our sponsors to see their support is being realized on the race course. Please contact me if you have any problems working in the website.
